A comparative cost analysis for using compost derived from anaerobic digestion as a peat substitute in a commercial plant nursery Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Restrepo,Adriana P; García García,José; Moral,Raúl; Vidal,Fernando; Pérez-Murcia,María D; Bustamante,María Á; Paredes,Concepción.
A.P. Restrepo, J. Garcia-Garcia, R. Moral, F. Vidal, M.D. Pérez-Murcia, M.A. Bustamante, and C. Paredes. 2013. A comparative cost analysis for using compost derived from anaerobic digestion as a peat substitute in a commercial plant nursery. Cien. Inv. Agr. 40(2): 253-264. The aim of this study was to evaluate the economic feasibility of using compost made from anaerobically digested cattle slurries in a commercial nursery. Using a comparative cost analysis, commercial peat substrate growing media has been partially substituted with increasing proportions of compost (25, 50 and 75% v/v of compost). This experiment was intended to establish the conditions under which the use of these composts is feasible and competitive relative to commercial peat, at both...

A decision support system for cost determination in grain storage facility operations REA
Valente,Domingos S. M.; Queiroz,Daniel M. de; Corrêa,Paulo C.; Silva,Luis C. da; Vale,Sônia M. L. R. do.
Many research works have being carried out on analyzing grain storage facility costs; however a few of them had taken into account the analysis of factors associated to all pre-processing and storage steps. The objective of this work was to develop a decision support system for determining the grain storage facility costs and utilization fees in grain storage facilities. The data of a CONAB storage facility located in Ponta Grossa - PR, Brazil, was used as input of the system developed to analyze its specific characteristics, such as amount of product received and stored throughout the year, hourly capacity of drying, cleaning, and receiving, and dispatch. By applying the decision support system, it was observed that the reception and expedition costs were...

A mezőgazdasági épületek és háztartások energiaköltségének csökkentése fontos a versenyképességben és a megélhetésben AgEcon
Herczeg, Rahel Sara; Suveges, Peter.

A note on the environmental costs of aggregates AgEcon
Berck, Peter.
The opening of a new site for the production of aggregates has both direct and indirect impacts on the environment. The indirect impacts include changes in the environmental costs of hauling aggregates and possible changes in the level of construction activity. In this note, we show that the most likely effect of a new aggregate site is to reduce the truck miles used for aggregate hauling, which is an environmental benefit. We also show that the change in construction activity induced by a new site is likely to be extremely small.

A sertéshústermelés színvonala és jövedelmezősége dunántúli gazdaságokban AgEcon
Pogany, Eva; Tenk, Antal; Trojan, Szabolcs; Varga, Rudolf.
Az országos adatok alapján a sertéságazat helyzete válságos, a 11 dunántúli gazdaságra kiterjedő, 2006–2008. évek közötti felmérésünkből viszont megállapítható, hogy megfelelő színvonalú, szervezettségű vágóalapanyag-termelés mellett tisztes jövedelmet lehet elérni. A vizsgálatba vont állomány (több mint 6 ezer koca és éves átlagban 100 ezer hízósertés) adatai alapján folyamatosan növekvő termelési költségek mellett számottevő különbség mutatkozott az integráción kívüli, illetve az iparszerű termelési rendszerhez (integrációhoz) tartozó gazdaságok eredményei között. A kocák reprodukciós teljesítménye és a takarmány értékesülés fajlagos mutatói közötti különbségek jelentősen differenciálták a két csoporthoz tartozó gazdaságok jövedelmét, az iparszerű...

A SOMOGY MEGYEI VADÁSZTÁRSASÁGOK KÖLTSÉGEI ÉS BEVÉTELEI AgEcon
Geszti, Szilard; Sebestyen, Julianna.
A 2004. évben a nagymértékű kiadásnövekedést a Somogy megyei vadásztársaságok kompenzálták, de az eltérő adottságok és lehetőségek miatt, a felmerült problémát a társaságok különböző módon oldották meg (pl. tagdíj nö-velésével, a vaddisznóhajtás értékesítésével, tárgyi eszközök értékesítésével, a vadgazdálkodási költség csökkentése segítségével). A kutatás kvalitatív részéből (a mélyinterjúkból) kiderült, hogy a vadásztársaságok anyagi...

AGRICULTURAL BIOTECHNOLOGY: FARM-LEVEL, MARKET, AND POLICY CONSIDERATIONS AgEcon
Van der Sluis, Evert; Diersen, Matthew A.; Dobbs, Thomas L..
This study provides an overview of the economic costs, benefits, and risks involved with agricultural biotechnology at the farm level, at the market level, and for the farm and food system as a whole. Both advantages and disadvantages of agricultural biotechnology are discussed. Among the drivers of U.S. domestic and international consumer demand for transgenic crop products discussed are environmental and food safety concerns. A comparison is made between a "science-based" regulatory framework and a policy based on the precautionary principle. The authors argue that open dialogue is needed for achieving improved public understanding of agricultural biotechnology, and that analyses need to go beyond discussing the scientific merits of biotechnology, to...

ALTERNATIVE COTTON PRODUCTION SYSTEMS AgEcon
Parvin, David W., Jr.; Cooke, Fred T., Jr.; Martin, Steven W..
Mississippi cotton farmers are adjusting to the current problem of low cotton price and high cotton production cost by modifying the way(s) they have traditionally grown cotton. This paper compares seven alternative production systems to the costs and returns associated with the conventional or traditional system labeled "solid cotton, 8-row equipment." Systems that combine wider equipment (less labor and machinery time per acre) with reduced tillage technology appear to offer opportunities to increase returns. Specific adjustments on individual farms will probably be dominated by the distribution of soil types.

AN ANALYSIS OF COSTS BY SIZE OF JAIL FOR SELECTED COUNTIES IN IOWA AgEcon
Edelman, Mark A.; Mayer, Adrian J..
Officials from eight counties selected according to jail size were interviewed. Parameters from site visits were used to estimate jail costs. The jails selected ranged in capacity from 5 to 41 prisoners. In addition, costs from the sample of local jails were compared to costs from studies of larger jails and state prisons. Jails with 5 to 41 bed capacity exhibited a U-shaped cost curve. Jail costs varied from a low of $35.20 per prisoner day for the 10 bed jail to $56.63 per prisoner day for the 40 bed jail. Therefore, costs vary by $21.43 per prisoner day for the sample of local jails examined in this study. The threshold economies of size achieved by smaller jails is due primarily to the shared staffing systems, a high degree of integration between...

Analysis of Costs and Returns to Maize-Cowpea Intercrop Production in Oyo state, Nigeria AgEcon
Segun-Olasanmi, A.O.; Bamire, A.S..
Net gains on agricultural investments promote sustainable farm production. The costs and returns analysis to maize-cowpea intercrop was analysed in selected communities of Oyo state, Nigeria, to determine the profitability of the enterprise. A multi-stage stratified sampling technique was used to select a sample size of one hundred and sixty maize-cowpea intercrop farmers in eighteen farming communities in the study area. Data were obtained from the farmers on their socio-economic characteristics, resource ownership, input and output used as well as costs incurred and revenue obtained for the 2006 production season using a structured questionnaire. Data were collected on a gender-disaggregated basis and analysed with the budgetary technique using the gross...

Aspectos económicos de la pesquería de caballa (Scomber japonicus) y muestreo de desembarque en el puerto de Mar del Plata. OceanDocs
Perrotta, R.G.; Tringali, L.S.; Izzo, A.; Boccanfuso, J.; López, F.; Macchi, G.J..
Movements pattern records of the Mar del Plata inshore fishing fleet during the 1997/98 and 1998/99 chub mackerel fishing seasons (October-January) allowed to observe that there is coincidence between the decrease of the 1983-1997 catches with respect to years previous to the 1975/76 "critical season" and a reduction of the inshore fleet fishing grounds which modifies accessibility of the fleet to the chub mackerel schools. Biostatistical and gonadal development results obtained in the Mar del Plata area (i.e., presence of adults during almost the whole fishing season which overlaps with the spawning season) do not differ significantly from those obtained during previous fishing seasons. As recommended in previous papers, chub mackerel fishing operations...

Benefits of Protecting Rural Water Quality: An Empirical Analysis AgEcon
Crutchfield, Stephen R.; Feather, Peter; Hellerstein, Daniel.
Concerns about the impact of farm production on the quality of the Nation's drinking and recreational water resources have risen over the past 10 years. Because point sources of pollution were controlled first, agricultural nonpoint sources have become the Nation's largest remaining single water-quality problem. Both public and private costs of policies that address the conflict between agricultural production and water quality are relevant, but measuring the off-farm benefits and costs of changing water quality is difficult. Many of the values placed on these resources are not measured in traditional ways through market prices. This report explores the use of nonmarket valuation methods to estimate the benefits of protecting or improving rural water...
